In 2010, I was a resident artist at Missoula International School. My mission was to create an original theater piece with middle school students and the Visual Art teacher for Dia de los Muertos. We set out to create a story that could help the kids cope with the massive Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the most devastating oils pill in the history of marine oil drilling. A Montana boy who had become disconnected from his Mexican ancestry, is led by his dear friend into an exploration of remembering the dead animals in the same way her family celebrated Dia de los Muertos. The ancestors helped the kids with humor and insights about caring for the other than human.
